Is this......for real? Did you just WRITE A FUCKING ESSAY to reply to one of my blog posts. Actually I'm kind of honoured you spent so much time on my website (1 hour, 1 minute, and 1 second to be precise, according to my statcounter). Anyway, two things:

1. This is a blog. A humour blog.
2. Who ever said I was sane?

As a Molecular Biomedicine undergrad. at University of Copenhagen, I have encountered EtBr in use a couple of times, and I know for a fact, that the description of the taste has been documented before the suspicion of carcinogenicity and mutagenicity so the poor soul didn't know that it probably was a highly toxic chemical. By the way the claim on toxicity has only been based on proven damage to DNA in the somatic cells of humans and animals, so it's only suggested as toxic. But it's probably as toxic as suggested. Furthermore it's possible to smell Chloroform/Trichloromethane without passing out, because the amount of Trichloromethane needed for smelling is much lesser than the amount used for anesthesia, It has a faint, sweet fragrance and gives a tingling sensation in the nose, so if you have passed out while smelling, then you need to consider how you handle dangerous chemicals. And no "sane" person who spend their daily time in a lab, would take a sniff of a bottle with chemicals, specially dangerous and volatile chemicals like Trichloromethane. Many patients died under surgery because of improper use of Trichloromethane, one of the main reasons why other chemicals were preferred for anesthesia later on. The right way to smell chemicals in bottles is to open the lid, and wave the "gasses" from the bottle towards you with your hand, this way you have the possibility to remove your self from the "gas" if it's to concentrated. By the way if you did take a whiff at the bottle and immediately passed out the whole content of the bottle would possibly have been spilled and you would possibly be dead now or have failing organs. 40000ppm of Trichloromethane in the air would cause a severe overdose which would easily be achieved in a regular sized laboratory with a 200ml bottle of Trichloromethane. Food for Thought so to say. Have a nice day by the way.
